Beekeeping & Bubba

January 30, 2010

Our Little Entrepreneur

For the past few years my 11-year old son has been talking about wanting to keep bees.  I told him that he would need to study up on it and find out what he could before we could go any further.  So, last year he read books on beekeeping and wrote a lengthy report (for a 10-year-old) on beekeeping and all that it entailed.  Even then, the idea intrigued him more and more.  So, my hubby and I told him that if he saved half the money, we would chip in the other half to buy the hive, bees, etc.

Do know the amazing thing?  He saved the entire amount, plus a little extra from Christmas money, that we were able to buy everything that he would need.  We made the order last night and should receive all the equipment within the next two weeks and the bees sometime in April or May.

I can’t say enough how proud I am of Bubba.  He set a goal and reached it.  And let me tell you, beekeeping equipment is not cheap.  We purchased the starter kit and it was over $400.  Bubba showed dedication, perseverance, frugality and self-control (as there were many other things he’d like to buy as well).

He’s a wonderful son and such a little entrepreneur!  He’s had an Ebay business (buying and selling video games) for several years (we help him with the ins and outs of it, but it’s pretty much his own little business).

Did I also mention that our children are on the Dave Ramsey plan?  But that’s a different story for another time.  Let me just say this, they understand the value of the dollar and they don’t buy anything unless they have the cash for it.
